Llengua indoària mitjana (un prakrit) de la família de llengües indoeuropees que es va originar al nord de l'Índia. No és una llengua viva de caràcter natiu, sinó que és la llengua sagrada i litúrgica del budisme Theravada, motiu pel qual s'estudia i es conserva de forma exclusiva com a vehicle de transmissions de textos religiosos i filosòfics.
